IPv6 Transition for a More Stable and Faster Mobile Network

As of the end of August 2026, we will be switching to IPv6 as the default connection standard on our mobile network. This will ensure a stable and fast network connection in the long term. IPv4 will remain available. Learn how to troubleshoot connection issues.

What will change with IPv6

In the future, your device will first connect to the Internet via IPv6, provided it supports IPv6. Devices that only support IPv4 are not affected by the change and will continue to function as usual.

The benefits of IPv6 for you:

  • A more stable connection for browsing, streaming, and making calls.
  • The apps and services you use every day will work more smoothly.
  • Your network is ready for future devices and services—without you having to do a thing.

Possible connection problems

In rare cases, connection problems may occur after the switchover:

  • Older smartphones or mobile devices with limited IPv6 support cannot establish an Internet connection.
  • Certain services or VPN connections are not fully compatible with IPv6.
  • Older VPN solutions (e.g., when using a smartphone as a hotspot) do not support IPv6.
  • Mobile routers get stuck in an endless loop when establishing a connection because the automatic selection between IPv4 and IPv6 fails.

Troubleshooting connection problems

If you're having connection issues after the switch, these steps will help you:

Make sure your smartphone or router is running the latest software.

If an app stops working or reports that it only works with IPv4 (e.g., VPN):

Android:
Create a new APN (Settings > “More Settings” / “Network & Internet” > “Mobile Networks” > “Access Points (APNs)”) with the following details:

  • Name/APN: gprs.swisscom.ch
  • APN Protocol: Select “IPv4v6” (default). If this does not provide a stable connection, select “IPv4” or “IPv6.”
  • Leave all other fields (Username, Password, Proxy, Port) blank.

iOS:
For most iPhones, no configuration is necessary. Starting with iOS 26.5, your iPhone automatically converts the connection so that apps that only support IPv4 (e.g., certain VPN apps) will work as well.

Exception: iPhone Xs when tethering. If you’re using an iPhone Xs as a hotspot for a laptop that connects via a corporate VPN without IPv6 support, install this configuration profile to manually set the connection to IPv4:

If your mobile router fails to establish a connection when automatically switching between IPv4 and IPv6: Manually set the protocol to IPv6 or IPv4 in the Mobile WAN settings.
