Swiss Early Stage Fund

Swiss Early Stage

Supporting the Swiss start-up community

More than 40,000 new companies are set up in Switzerland every year. They are fundamental contributors to the economic growth and innovation of the country. Swisscom Ventures and Swisscom’s SME division have joined forces to create an Early Stage Fund that supports the Swiss start-up community. In addition to investing, Swisscom supports various initiatives for entrepreneurs, such as venture incubators in Basel, Zurich & Bern, as well as the annual Swisscom StartUp Challenge.

Investment strategy

Focus on Switzerland, early stage

Our Early Stage Fund provides funding for Swiss start-ups in the seed or series A stage. We prefer to start with small entry tickets below CHF 1 million and follow with additional investments up to CHF 5 million in line with the company’s progress.

This fund covers a wide range of areas, from digital media to cleantech, with the exception of biotech. The purpose is to encourage the emergence of Swiss technology leaders leveraging the country’s innovation centres. The fund is only available to Swiss companies.

How we help

We offer access to our experts in operations, technical development, finance, production, administration and marketing.

We offer technical support, a comprehensive range of ICT services and access to our telecommunications infrastructure and testing labs.

Market access

We offer access to our sales channels in Switzerland, partner companies, investors and our outpost office in the Silicon Valley. We promote coordination between the Swisscom business units and the start-ups.

We offer access to other telecommunication service providers who work with Swisscom around the globe. To nurture this network, we organise the Swisscom Corporate Venturing Summit every second year, bringing together the most important players in the industry.

Case study

LiberoVision 3D sports enhancements

Swisscom provided the initial funding for LiberoVision in 2007 and exited in 2011, when LiberoVision was sold to Vizrt, a global technology leader for the TV/digital media industry.

LiberoVision was founded by 3 young PhD engineers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ), who were passionate about sports and 3D image technology. In addition to funding, Swisscom provided the team with vital access to the TV studios of its subsidiary Cinetrade, so that LiberoVision could demonstrate its technology for the first time on a live TV football game.

LiberoVision rapidly expanded internationally to become the global leader for 3D virtual sports enhancements. The software generates the best perspectives for analyzing interesting or controversial scenes. LiberoVision’s Emmy Award nominated technology is available for football, American football, basketball, ice hockey, baseball, and rugby. Broadcasters around the world such as ESPN, ZDF and the BBC enhance their sport analysis with products designed by the Swiss-based company. After its sale to the Norwegian company Vizrt, the LiberoVision CEO became responsible for Vizrt’s entire sports software division and developed this business out of the Zurich office.
