Swisscom launches app for online child safety

In today’s digital world, smartphones, social media and gaming have become the norm for many families. However, parents often seek guidance and support to help their children stay safe online and use digital media responsibly. This is where Swisscom’s new Kids Security app comes in, helping families to agree on and implement rules governing smartphone and Internet use.

Kids Security offers features such as screen time limits, app controls, a content filter, usage statistics and optional geolocation. Different modes, including a free-time mode and focus mode for homework, also help families navigate the digital world safely. App users can also access wide-ranging content and tips for improving media skills and using digital media responsibly.

Encouraging healthy digital media habits

Unlike conventional parental control tools, Kids Security focuses on guidance rather than monitoring. Children are actively involved in the process and families are able to define rules for smartphone and Internet use together. Transparency is at the heart of the concept: for example, children are notified if a parent is trying to locate them.

“Digitalisation offers children and young people a world full of opportunities. But it is equally important that they learn how to use digital content effectively, responsibly and safely. With Kids Security, we are helping parents and children develop healthy digital media habits and safely embrace the opportunities of the networked world,” explains Dirk Wierzbitzki, Head of Residential Customers and Member of the Executive Committee of Swisscom Switzerland.
