Everything you need to know

All types of bicycle – with or without pedal assistance. Example: racing bikes, mountain bikes, cargo bikes or e-bikes.

Bicycles and e-bikes with pedal assistance up to 25 km/h are often included in household contents insurance – but only within your own four walls. There is usually no cover for damage to the bicycle or theft while travelling. Although many household contents insurance policies can be taken out with the "simple theft away from home" add-on, even then the cover is often limited to around CHF 2,000 – nowhere near enough for high-quality bicycle or e-bikes. Damage to the bicycle is usually not insured at all. Incidentally, fast e-bikes with assistance up to 45 km/h are not included in household contents insurance and must be insured separately.

The deductible in the event of a loss is 10 % of the claim, with a minimum of CHF 200. For claims from the additional cover (e.g. contingency insurance, costs) there is no deductible.

  • For a repair: the repair costs
  • In the event of a total loss: the value according to the replacement value table

Example: a 3-year-old bicycle has a replacement value of 70% of the new price.

Age from initial purchase date

Replacement value

In the 1st and 2nd year following initial purchase

100% of the new value

In the 3rd and 4th year from new purchase

70% of the new value

In the 5th and 6th year from new purchase

50% of the new value

From the 7th year from new purchase

30% of the new value

  • If your bicycle is expensive or of high quality (e.g. carbon frame or special components)
  • If you are on the road a lot (travelling, city traffic, commuting)
  • If you want to protect yourself against all eventualities – even when travelling

Bicycle insurance not only pays out in the event of fire/natural hazards, water damage and loss or damage resulting from theft, but also in the event of other damage and loss.

"All Risk" means everything is insured unless it is expressly excluded. Examples of non-covered damage:

  • Damage that has occurred gradually and not suddenly (exposure to light, temperature, humidity, dryness or oxidation, wear and tear, ageing, colour change and material fatigue)
  • Damage that has occurred without external influences (e.g. internal operational damage)
  • Damage caused by vermin and rodents

The value of the bicycle is determined by the purchase receipt (price paid on the date of purchase).

Do you have a second hand bicycle? The original new purchase price must then be stated. If you do not know the original new purchase price, it is best to contact your trusted bike dealer. The bike dealer can estimate the new purchase price and confirm it for you in writing.
