Plenty of power for BMW

The BMW Group, with its 31 production and assembly facilities in 15 countries, is the world's leading manufacturer of premium automobiles and motorcycles, and provider of premium financial and mobility services. For the #VisionaryDreams livestreaming event at the Brand Experience Center in Dielsdorf, BMW (Switzerland) AG relies on secure, high-performance and high-availability Internet access from Swisscom.

Challenge

Each spring BMW presents its latest vehicle models to a large audience at the Geneva International Motor Show, however due to the Corona pandemic, the 2021 event was unfortunately cancelled. It quickly became clear that a virtual event was needed as a replacement in order to reach and inspire the audiences at home with the latest models, such as the all-electric BMW iX and BMW i4.

Shortly after the start of the planning phase, Stéphanie Borge, Director Brand Management, realised that a conventional internet connection would not be enough: ‘We set ourselves with the goal of inspiring around 30,000 people throughout Switzerland with an exciting, varied programme consisting of different digital formats. And in three languages. To effectively achieve this, we would require a secure and stable internet access with a lot of power, where we could also flexibly adjust the bandwidth.’

In this case, a lot of power meant an Internet connection that was 10 times stronger than the company's previous Internet access. This much power would be needed to provide 30,000 viewers with streaming in appealing HD quality. As the vehicles are already premium, the line must also meet this demand.

Solution

BMW (Switzerland) AG opted for Swisscom's IP-Plus Business Internet Service. In addition to the high scalability and flexibility of the solution, the enormous time pressure that prevailed from the start of the project was also decisive for the choice. Between the first contact with the person responsible for the customer at Swisscom and the realisation of the Internet access, there were just under 2 weeks in which everyone involved went full throttle. ‘There was no question that for such a short-term implementation we wanted to work with a proven IT partner who had the necessary capacity and experience to deliver a stable Internet line in an extremely short time,’ Borge emphasises.

Also because the necessary resources and technical know-how are not available internally, BMW (Switzerland) AG appreciated the uncomplicated, professional cooperation, in which the respective customer needs were addressed quickly and flexibly. Although the company opted for the high-performance Internet access because of the livestreaming event, it will also be used for future digital platforms, explains Stéphanie Borge: ‘We are constantly testing new formats and want to offer our clientele surprising, unconventional content, generate enthusiasm and try out new ways of communicating’. With IP-Plus Business Internet Service, the company has laid an important technical foundation for further, innovative digitalisation projects.
