FuckUp-Nights - getIT

At Swisscom, we organise FuckUp Nights to learn from our mistakes. Here are a few impressions and an explanation:

What are FuckUp Nights (FUN)?

Fuckup Nights is a global movement and series of events in which stories of professional failure are told. At each event, three to four people tell a 10-minute story about a major mistake/failure and what they and others can learn from it. These can be major failures, failed projects, wrong decisions or even the failure of products, their recall or unsuccessful initiatives. We use failure and the power of storytelling to share experiences that change the error culture and the culture at Swisscom.

Why do we organise FuckUp Nights?

  • Managing failure: We tell the stories that make us stronger and help to create a culture that celebrates doing rather than stigmatising failure.
  • Resilience: Our stories promote a culture of transparency and psychological safety. We eliminate shame and transform it into accountability and autonomy.
  • A culture of learning: Culture is individual behaviour on a large scale. To transform our organisation and its culture, we focus on guiding individuals and teams towards a growth mindset.

Rules for the FuckUp Nights:

So that we can get the best out of our events, please observe the following rules:

  • Honesty is the be-all and end-all: Only completely honest presentations make a FuckUp Night.
  • Own failure: The stories should include failures in which you were in the lead or at least significantly involved.
  • No positive ending: A FuckUp does not have a positive ending, but the focus is on the learnings and their impact on you personally and the company.
  • Integration of learnings: The learnings presented should not just end up on a slide, but should ideally be implemented in future projects.

Together we learn from our mistakes and shape the future!
