Talents on the move: Josip Gasic

In our "Talents on the Move" series, we introduce you to former and current Swisscom talents who have benefited from our internal talent programme "SCALE". In a year-long learning journey and beyond, our SCALE participants develop both personally and professionally. Today we introduce you to Josip Gasic. He is a Lean Cluster Engineer at Swisscom.

In September 2020, you took over the position of Lean Cluster Engineer, marking a significant step in your development. How did this change come about and what helped you?

Before the change, I was able to lead numerous teams over the years and manage other special tasks, such as initiatives. This allowed me to get to know many new colleagues and constantly grow with the challenges. With the further development of INI-NET (Swisscom's network infrastructure department) and the consistent focus on NWoW (New Ways of Working), my interest in collaboration and culture, i.e. the way people think and act, grew. For example, how do organisations really succeed in using lean-agile as a means to an end in order to achieve goals? Actively helping to shape this path was the crucial point for me.

My network within Swisscom certainly helped here. In particular, the numerous projects in which I was able to demonstrate my skills and also my way of working with people. I see going the extra mile, i.e. doing more than others, as a very important quality. I consider tackling and solving problems (yes, I deliberately call it that) to be another key quality. Let's be honest, we are confronted with them every day, at all levels.

What has been the biggest challenge for you so far in your new job and what do you particularly enjoy?

How do you approach the transformation around NWoW, through theory or rather through practice? In my view, there is not THE way, rather it is the context and the history of an organisation that must be taken into account. I am also convinced that learning by doing is a central component of day-to-day work and cannot take place separately in a "classroom." The immediate environment in which I mainly work is very respectful, helpful and full of drive. I enjoy interacting with these people and getting things moving.

What things at SCALE do you benefit most from in terms of your development?

Basically: What Swisscom provides and invests here for its employees (talents) is sensational. I am grateful to be able to be here.

What fascinates me most in this environment is the energy and openness of the people - it's downright infectious. Carrying this (transversal) spirit into the organisation is key for tomorrow. The fact that I have expanded my own network as a result is a nice side effect. For me, it's more about sharing experiences on identical topics with colleagues from different departments. Which topic can still be considered and driven forward in isolation in an organisational unit today? Probably less and less.
