Hybrid cloud and cloud native in banking: prospects for business & IT

Hybrid environments require new operating models, change the roles and responsibilities we know today and raise new questions about regulatory requirements, especially when outsourcing banking applications to the cloud. In short: hybrid means more complexity, but harbours new opportunities and possibilities for shaping business and IT more innovatively and efficiently, as well as bringing them closer to customers. This is one of the reasons why more and more banks are opting for hybrid environments.

We would like to examine and discuss the many facets of hybrid cloud setups and cloud native in banking at an event organised by Swisscom. On 31 August 2021, we will share insights into the world of technology trends (keyword e.foresight) and what they mean for the financial sector.

Hybrid environments do not necessarily mean the same thing for business and IT, which is why we are pursuing a dual approach with parallel sessions for business and IT. In the business track, we will focus on the framework conditions for outsourcing banking applications to the cloud and take a closer look at what this means in terms of regulatory aspects. This is because outsourcing banking applications and processing customer data to the public cloud is generally permitted under Swiss banking regulation, but requires compliance with numerous regulatory provisions.

How do peers deal with this issue? Let's dive into an example from the financial sector: A customer reports on its implementation in a hybrid setup and talks about opportunities, challenges and what in particular needs to be considered during implementation. Finally, there will be an input session on operational security, service availability and how banks can keep pace with ever faster development cycles.

In the IT track, we will start with the topic of cloud-native container workload management and what this means end-to-end, from conceptualisation, tooling and blueprints for design through to the integration and operation of container-based applications. The practical example should not be missing here either, so we will dive into a financial customer case with a technical deep dive from the perspective of a solution architect. Finally, we will look at the topic of end-to-end observability and the impact on IT: aspects such as transparency across applications and infrastructure as well as reliable service delivery.

We are planning to hold this event physically, if the pandemic situation allows. Afterwards, there will be the opportunity to discuss the topics from the morning in plenary 1:1 or in small groups over a standing lunch. If the situation makes it impossible to hold the event physically, we will postpone it until spring 2022.
