“A second chance at life.”

I was forced to flee Afghanistan with my husband and daughter as the Taliban had threatened to kill us. Our arrival in Switzerland was like being reborn.

In the first few months in the refugee camp, all we could do was wait and see as we had no status. I found that very tough. Then I heard about Powercoders – a programming bootcamp for refugees. I applied and was accepted. This was the point when my life changed completely. At the end of the bootcamp, I was given an internship at Swisscom, where I gained experience working as a developer. I had completed a bachelor’s degree in IT back in Kabul, but starting at Swisscom was still a challenge. I had previously worked as an IT teacher and was only familiar with program language as a theory. Fortunately, my lovely work colleagues helped me to integrate very quickly. They were very patient with me!
