AWS will open a new cloud location in Zurich at the end of 2022. Swisscom recently received the AWS Direct Connect partnership and will thus enable a direct connection to the AWS data centres in Zurich.
In addition to a site-to-site VPN, Direct Connect is the second option for integrating the AWS Cloud into the company network. The AWS data centres in Zurich are connected to the Swisscom network via private fibre optic lines. Site-to-site VPN connections are typically established via the Internet.
Normally, service providers offer connections to public clouds such as AWS or Microsoft Azure via partners, as they do not have their own infrastructure directly in the data centres of the public clouds. Through the Direct Connect partnership, Swisscom will provide direct, geo-redundant fibre optic links without the involvement of active devices from a third-party company. With the direct connection of AWS, Swisscom is relying on a proven concept. The existing direct connection of the Microsoft Azure clouds in Zurich and Geneva has been available for around two years and is being used successfully.
Thanks to the Direct Connect partnership, Swisscom can offer everything from a single source: with Enterprise Connect, a company network or even just a data centre can be connected directly to AWS. Configuration is simple via the customer portal: data centre and cloud connections can be configured directly in the portal and can be used within a few minutes.
Direct Connect also has several advantages: firstly, traffic is not routed via the public Internet. This eliminates or reduces some security risks. In addition, private connections offer strong performance values in terms of latency and jitter. Connections are geo-redundant end-to-end, and with a consistent SLA of 99.99%, customers are optimally protected against outages. Depending on the amount of data, Direct Connect can also reduce costs.
