Courses for parents and educators

With all the possibilities that the internet offers children and young people, it is easy for parents to lose track. Parents may sometimes find it difficult to understand young people's enthusiasm for the internet and, above all, for games and social media. What is my child doing on the internet? What is the appeal? When are concerns justified and how can they protect themselves from risks? Our courses help – tailored to age and needs. So that parents can accompany and support their children in navigating the Internet safely. Also available as an evening course for parents from different language groups.

Topic

The role of parents: being a role model

As in many other areas of life, children and young people copy the behaviour they see in their caregivers. This applies to road traffic, language use and everyday media consumption.

Parents have the opportunity to guide their children towards a balanced and responsible approach to media through their own media behaviour. This applies not only to time spent online, but also to the handling of information in digital media, their own behaviour on social media, and their children's use of third-party content or images (sharenting).

Parents' evening for parents from different language groups

This format is specifically designed for schools with a high proportion of pupils and parents from different language groups and cultures. The course content is tailored to the respective school level, from nursery school to upper secondary school. The event is organised in close cooperation with the school.

Procedure and objectives

Part 1: Input presentation in German
We raise awareness of the different aspects of media use in simple and understandable language and illustrate the statements with pictures.

Part 2: Workshop groups with translators
Divided into language groups, parents jointly develop strategies for their role as companions. The aim is to ensure that these can be implemented directly in ‘everyday family media life’.

Part 3: Presentation of group work, consolidation and conclusion
The group presentations and the associated discussion in the plenary session at the end of the event broaden the participants' horizons.

Contents
  • Digital world, roles of children/young people and parents in media guidance.
  • Key topics tailored to school levels, such as: balanced leisure activities, age ratings, guidance in media use, games and social networks, parents as role models.
  • Workshop on media guidance in separate language groups: space for discussion and personal exchange of experiences; development of joint action strategies for relevant media situations in everyday family life, which are then presented to the plenary; moderation of the workshop section by a translator, with prior consultation and support from the media trainer.
