E-mail security standards to be upgraded

  • From 1 October 2025, Bluewin e-mail will only support modern security standards such as TLS 1.2 and 1.3.
  • Older e-mail programs or devices, such as smartphones, laptops/PCs or tablets, that only support outdated security standards such as TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 will need to be updated. Newer devices will not be affected and will continue to function as normal.
  • Alternatively, you can send and receive your e-mails via Bluewin Webmail(opens in new tab) using the latest Internet browser.

Frequently asked questions

On 1 October 2025, Swisscom will retire the TLS 1.0 and 1.1 encryption protocols to improve the security of its e-mail traffic. As of this date, devices used for Bluewin e-mail will need to support TLS 1.2 or 1.3 (security protocols). The old TLS 1.0 and 1.1 encryption protocols will no longer be supported.

This means that, if you are using your Bluewin e-mail address with an e-mail program that uses the old TLS 1.0 and 1.1 protocols, you will no longer be able to send or receive Bluewin e-mails with that program from 1 October 2025.

You are most likely to be affected if you have been using your operating system, e-mail program or device (laptop/PC, smartphone, tablet) for over five years.

If you are using one of the following e-mail programs, for example, you will need to update:

On the computer

  • Outlook 2010 for Windows or earlier
  • Outlook 2011 for Mac
  • Apple Mail on Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) or earlier

On the mobile phone / smartphone or tablet

  • Apple Mail on iOS 10 or earlier
  • Android 4.4 or earlier

If an update is not possible, the device may be too old and need to be replaced

Do you need support?

  • This is a security risk for you. To ensure that you can continue to receive and send emails, you will need to update your email programme by October 2025 at the latest.
  • You can conveniently access, receive and send your Bluewin e-mails via Webmail(opens in new tab) using an up-to-date Internet browser. Please note that if you are using an outdated Internet browser, the customer experience may be limited or access difficulties may occur. We therefore recommend that you keep your browser up to date to ensure optimum utilisation.
  • If your e-mail program already supports the TLS 1.2 and 1.3 protocols, everything will continue to function as normal. You will continue to be able to send and receive e-mails.

No. Webmail(opens in new tab) automatically uses the latest security protocols, TLS 1.2 and 1.3. If you already use webmail today and it works without restrictions, you don't need to do anything.

If you want to keep using an e-mail program, you will need to replace your device with a new one.

Use a current Web browser that is fully supported by our Webmail service, and make sure your device’s operating system is up to date:

  • Google Chrome: latest version
  • Mozilla Firefox: latest version
  • Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based): latest version
  • Apple Safari: Version 18.x
  • iOS/iPadOS: 17.7.1 and later, 18.x or later
  • Android: Version 10 or later

Please note that although you may be able to access your Bluewin Webmail with older browsers and operating systems, the service may be restricted.

You can change your e-mail password at any time in My Swisscom(opens in new tab).

More details

TLS stands for Transport Layer Security and is a security protocol for encrypting data in digital communication. It ensures a secure connection between your mail program (e.g. Outlook or Apple Mail) and the mail server. It protects content, such as e-mails, login details and other data, from interception or manipulation by third parties during transmission.

The TLS 1.0 and 1.1 protocols are outdated and no longer meet modern security standards. All current mail programs support the latest security standards.

TLS 1.2 and 1.3 make the sending and receiving of e-mails much more secure.

If you see one of the following error messages, you will need to update your e-mail program or device:

  • 0x800CCC1A. Your server does not support the connection encryption type you have specified. Try changing the encryption method. Contact your mail server administrator or internet service provider (ISP) for further assistance.
  • SSL/TLS Handshake Failed
  • TLS connection failed
  • Could not connect to server.
  • SSL encryption error
  • SSL_accept error
  • System.Net.WebException: The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel.

This list is not exhaustive. Other error messages are also possible.
